Do you remember that feeling of friendship and complicity you had when sharing a set of headphones with someone close? The enthusiasm of experiencing your favorite song with them and the closeness created within that moment of intimacy? For a few moments, the entire world was blurred out, and just the two of you were left vibrating in unison to a song that I bet you still carry with you.

From our most recent favorite song to representations of cultural heritage that grow on us as we age, art can be useful in exploring identity, building community, and finding common ground with the people around us. It can help us make new friends, deepen our connections with others, remember where we came from, and inspire us to dream big about where we’re going next.

Drawing on the idea of art as a tool for connection, The World Refugee Day Mural created by @wanda.direct captures a candid moment between two young people sharing a song. It stands as a symbol of our capacity to overcome our differences and relate to each other through the universal languages of art and human emotion.

Murals transform spaces into landmarks, and when the community is involved, they create meaningful connections.

The message in this mural is the result of a collaboration between local and refugee youth for World Refugee Day. UNHCR, Active Random, and JBL joined forces to make this project a reality. We've already scattered several murals across Bucharest, each celebrating the creativity of the community.

where to spot it?

In overcrowded cities, street art and large-scale murals transform ordinary spaces into vibrant landmarks, serving as visual anchors amidst urban noise. Striking like billboards, murals capture attention, spark curiosity, and engage viewers on a personal level, creating identity, belonging, and moments of reflection in busy landscapes.

With their artistry, murals and street art turn blank walls into symbols of culture, community, and history, fostering pride and defining neighborhoods. In residential areas or city hubs, custom mural designs and hand-painted wall art add warmth, character, and a deeper connection to their surroundings, transforming spaces and telling unique visual stories.
